IMDB: Ratings, Reviews and its Growth
The abbreviation of IMDB is that it stands for Internet Movie Database, a website that contains data on movies, TV shows, music videos, podcasts, home videos, video games, and streaming content online. This data includes cast, crew, and personal biographies, plot summaries, trivia, ratings, and reviews from fans and critics. IMDb began as a fan-operated movie database on the Usenet group “rec. arts. movies” in 1990, and moved to the Web in 1993. It has been under IMDb.com, Inc. ownership and management since 1998., an Amazon subsidiary.
As of March 2022, the database contained some 10.1 million titles including TV episodesAlexa and 11.5 million person records. Additionally, the site had 83 million registered users. The site’s message boards were disabled in February 2017. As of 12 February, IMDB is the 54th most visited website in the world, according to website ranker Alexa.
On every released movie in the database, IMDb registered users can cast a vote (from 1 to 10) for it. The combined result of individual votes is then displayed on the title’s main page as a single IMDb rating. By “released title,” we mean that the film (or TV show) must have at least one public showing, including a festival screening. Users can update their votes as often as they’d like, but each user is only allowed to cast one vote for each title. Any new vote on the same title will replace the previous one.
IMDb is headquartered in Seattle and is a fully owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, but the founder and CEO Col Needham continues to work out of Bristol, England, where the website was first established. Needham, a film enthusiast and English software engineer, started what would become IMDb by compiling a list of every movie he had seen since 1980. IMDb was allegedly founded on October 17, 1990, when Needham uploaded his movie-listing program to a USENET discussion group for movies.
The website was cooperatively expanded and migrated early to the World Wide Web. Incorporated in January 1996, IMDb . com was acquired by Amazon. com two years later. IMDb was to be used as a platform for the sale of videotapes and DVDs by Amazon, an online bookseller at the time that was expanding its product line. In the 21st century, many movies became electronically accessible directly from the IMDb website through Amazon Video. IMDb maintained its identity and significant autonomy even after becoming an Amazon subsidiary. As CEO, Needham remained in place.
IMDb is the most reliable resource for entertainment news, and it has tools to guide viewers as they explore the world of films and television and choose what to watch.
1. Get information – Recall a movie, show, or person that is on the tip of your tongue, or binge on details about the movies and shows you enjoy.
2. Make the most of your screen time by selecting the best film or television program to watch next.
3. With the largest fanbase in the world, share your enthusiasm by sharing your expertise and viewpoints in the entertainment industry.
A movie on IMDB typically receives a 6 out of 10 rating. The majority of movies therefore fall within this range in terms of their rating. There are some exceptions, though, with some films receiving significantly higher or lower ratings than the norm. The IMDB rating of 7.0 is generally considered to be very good. We don’t claim that IMDB ratings are “accurate” in an absolute qualitative sense, but they are “accurate” in the sense that they were generated using a fair, consistent formula. IMDB provides these ratings as a streamlined means of learning what opinions other IMDb users from around the globe have regarding the movies we list on our site.
