Russia imposes new restrictions on Facebook and other platforms amidst tensed Ukraine situations
According to cybersecurity platforms and journalists, accessibility to social media networks Facebook and a number of news websites, such as the BBC, has been banned in Russia.
On February 26, the Internet governance watchdog NetBlocks announced that Russia had banned accessibility to Twitter and Facebook for its citizens. The ban on Facebook has been increased to new service providers, according to NetBlocks’ internet access data released on Friday.

Furthermore, several news websites such as the BBC, Germany’s Deutsche Welle, and Latvia’s Meduza were partially or completely unavailable. The BBC also claimed that its Russian service has been banned in the country, citing Moscow’s state-owned news agency RIA. Meanwhile, a correspondent for the German news website Der Spiegel stated that Russia has blocked Twitter, Facebook, the BBC, Deutsche Welle, and app stores.
There have been multiple claims of a broad cyber strike on Kyiv since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. A hacker organisation used Facebook to target key Ukrainian military officers, politicians, and a journalist, according to Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook.
The USA and other Ukraine affiliated nations take steps to demonetise Russia-orginated platforms
Meanwhile, according to NetBlocks, the US and Ukraine’s European Union allies have taken steps to demonetize Russian state-run content outlets. Since February 27, Russian media platforms owned or controlled by Moscow, such as RT and Sputnik, have been withdrawn from the Apple App Store and Google Play shops in the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, and Ukraine.
